I agree that many who weren't directly affected in the present were incensed. But I think the same reasoning explains why large numbers of people think the estate tax is bad even though the vast majority will never pay it. It is the notion that success and hard work will be met with a response from government that the resulting morsels of wealth should be confiscated and put to work toward dubious ends. Not only the rich are upset by that; anyone who believes in the work ethic and enjoying the fruits of their labor and who hopes to be rich someday may also be upset.
