Well I guess I can agree to the extent that its nonsense to say that human activity doesn't at least have a minor effect on weather and climate...

Well, of course you can agree with that.

Maybe you don't remember the last time we had this discussion. Let me refresh your memory. You ended up agreeing that human activity affects climate. I don't know why you are so grudging about acknowledging it now.

Obviously there is some effect, but I think it doesn't put someone in the category of "too weird to be included in the debate" if they think the effect is minor

But I didn't say anything about whether the effect was minor or major. I didn't even say if the effect was warming or cooling, although the human effect is obviously warming. I just said that it has an effect on global climate. And I continue to insist that anyone who can't agree with that has something wrong with him. Saying that human activity has an effect on climate is the climatological equivalent of saying that the earth is round.

Yet when I say that the earth is round, I get an argument. I'm asked to prove it. I'm treated like I just said that we should sign the Kyoto Treaty when I said nothing of the sort. And that is the point of this exercise.

This issue of global climate change has become so charged and so polarized that the anti-environmental crowd cannot look at a moderate, non-controversial statement like the one I made without seeing red and getting their defenses lined up for a fight. I don't know what they see when they see my simple statement that evokes the call to arms. All I said is that the earth is round.

We will never be able to deal with this issue as long as we have people on one side shouting that the sky is falling and on the other side denying that human activity affects climate. If the two sides can agree that climate is affected, then we can deal with the questions of how it is affected and to what extend it is affected. And then we can figure out what, if anything, to do about it. But we can't get anywhere as long as people put their dukes up at a simple statement like mine.

Which is why I was so pleased with the Administration's report. Until Bush disavowed it, that is.

End of rant.
