DJ Deutsche Telekom, DaimlerChrysler Present 3G Car >DT DCX
BERLIN (Dow Jones)--Deutsche Telekom AG (DT) and DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) said new wireless technology means they can equip vehicles with a range of services,
from navigation systems to video on demand.
The two companies, along with Siemens AG (SI) and Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW), Thursday presented a Mercedes-Benz S Class car equipped with third-generation
mobile communications.
The driver and passengers can access a navigation system with maps and pictures from traffic cameras. The terminals enable passengers to call up e-mails, connect to
their office computer networks, and hold video conferences. Entertainment includes videos, multi-player games and music.
"We're creating the necessary know-how to be able to satisfy our customers' demand for mobile UMTS services of the future," said Hans-Joachim Schoepf, head of
development at Mercedes-Benz cars.
DaimlerChrysler provided the car and fitted it out with the necessary monitors. Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile International AG (G.TMO) unit and Siemens developed the 3G
network in Berlin, while Sun Microsystems provided computer hardware.
Six groups, including Deutsche Telekom, spent more than EUR8 billion apiece on 3G licenses in Germany, and are pumping billions more euros into building networks and
developing services. Analysts believe the groups will have difficulty recouping their investment.
