E=1/2 M*V^2.

BP - ML (black powder muzzle loader)

V = velocity, it is squared. 1500 feet per second
is 457 metres /sec .. squared is 209,036

Mass is 500 grains is 1.04 troy ounces or 32.39 grams.
or .032399 kg's

Energy is (.039399/2) * 209036 =

3,386

That is in glooferdusses or somelike.

*******
.223 modearn riffle shootin iron as in US military.
********

3200 feet per second. is 997.48 metres/second
.. squared is 994,969.0

mass of bullet is 55 grains. or 3.56 grams or
.00356393 kgs. over two is .00178 gks times above
is 1,773 of them glooferdusses .. or
kilograms metres/second squared

Foot pounds is clearer for most folk
who eat collared greens.

1800 Kentucky shootin iron. -->

mass is difficult here. it must be divided by
32. 500 grains is 32.39 /28.349/16/32 got it?
over 2 is

That is .0001115 times 1500 squared =

2510 foot pounds. (Kentucky rifle)

Whoppin.

So how is our .223 calibre?

55 grains is 3.56/28.349/16/32 == .00024526
over 2 is .0001226

times

muzzle velocity is 3200 fps
squared is 10,240,000 ... is

1255 foot pounds (M16)

So the modern M16 has half the muzzle energy of a
standard black powder rifle of 1800.

Tragicstory or bullet curve of old 1500 feet
per second rifle was a lobber. But it carried
well. It did not shoot well beyond 400 usually.

Lets see. at 1500 fps start and 1100 at end.
That is 1300 average. in one second a bullet falls
S=1/2at^2 or distance = one half gravity acceleration
times the time squared.
So that is 16 times one or 16 feet.

In 500 yards the bullet took about 1.15 seconds.
Actually with tragicstory about 1.2 seconds. So
1.44 (1.2 squared) times 1/2 accel of gravity that is
23.04 feet fall. So you must be 11.523 feet high at
250 yards approx. That is .55 inches of rise on your back site in 36 inches of distance from the front site to backsite.

The 223 goes from 3200 to let's say 1500 fps.
That is 2350 average. That is .638 seconds. Closer to
.701 on the curve.

S=1/2aT^2 = .702 squared times 16 equals 7.88 feet
fall in 500 yards.

You have to aim 2.626 feet high. Or be that much
higher at 250 yards. (You aim 7.88 feet high at 500.)
The sighting plane is made to shoot .189 inches in 36
high.

This is all theoretical because actually you shoot
from below the sighting plane to above and the back
part of the curve near the target is much steeper than the front part.

So you have to aim different than I calculated.
