"You have shown no reason why we should give this particular aspect of child protection federal attention as opposed to other risks to children such as guns and cars and peanut butter and pet dander."

Child/citizen protection in regards to fire arms, automobiles, food and drugs, and disease is regulated and has adequate federal attention. I am not advocating that those things not be subject to federal guidelines and that the internet should be. I am appauled by the lack of concern for child protection on the internet in comparison with everywhere else. The lame excuses given that technological development is somehow out of our hands ticks me off.

You are advocating new policy/attitudes regarding public safegaurds, not me. My question to you has always been, do you really want to do that knowing the long term and broader implications. Your response has been that you can't imagine any implications beyond the library.

"It is customary for the protection of children to be handled locally. That is the default. If you want the feds mucking around in it, the burden is on you to demonstrate why this particular need warrants special intervention.

Protection is handled locally. Guidelines are handled through policy which is not local. Regulations for protection doesn't exist without some guidance. Protection has no definition without regulation. With not guiding regulatory definition we are merely sitting with our heads in the sand.

Once again I do not think it is a special situation except that it has been protected as the exception.

I like campfires, I hate wild fires and I don't send my children wandering into them.
