Both XP and 2000 are modular operating systems. All processes run in either user or kernel mode, both can access NTFS file systems. All processes in kernel mode take priority over user modes, so an ill behaved app is less likely to "lock" the whole machine. I have never experienced crashes to the degree you have described with 2000 pro. XP combines the reliablity of 2000pro with the compatibility of 98se. I just dont like the look and network configuration options of XP. Millenium is garbage.
None of them match the reliability of unix.
