One interesting tid-bit about Laplace was that

whenever, in the course of his lectures, he said with a gleam in his eye,

"From here it is obvious that this result follows,"

his students have learnt from experience that it was time to pack their bags and head for the countryside to contemplate, for at least one week, what he meant.

One thing about France which many didn't seem to notice is that its mathematicians (especially those of the 18th & 19th centuries) had made very important contributions to
higher mathematics, notably in differential equations (and Laplace transforms.)
