if you see a possible cause and effect....evolve when freedom and responsibility are lacking.

Hi Mrs. P....IMO the article posted by LPS5 "How to make people more responsible" should be FAXED immediately to all of the parents of these "Shut in" men.

From the article you posted:

Japan's wealth makes it possible for people to cut themselves off from society. .... Teens and adults who drop out of school or leave work are simply supported by their parents.

What motivation would a teen or an adult have to become self supportive when they know that they will be supported by their parents?

"When I was young, there was no question that you would have to go to work," said Abe, 61, who asked that her son, who refused to talk to a visitor, not be named. "Now, families have enough money so that the children don't need to find jobs right away." In an attempt to get their son to communicate with them, Abe and her husband have decided that from now on, they are not going to slip an envelope under his door with his $400 monthly allowance.

Hmmm...the father was raised with the belief that he knew he "had to work". Their son is a shut in, who has been supported by his parents, won't communicate with them...but continues to "earn" an allowance?!? ....Now with their "get tough" program they are still going to support their son at home, but just not give him an allowance? Why would anyone "grow up" with parents who support them and with parents who have a belief that "since the parents are wealthy the child doesn't need to find a job right away"?

From the article posted by LPS5:

If we want people to act more responsibly, there's only one way to bring it about: Set them free.

IMO the answer to this problem is to "set them free."
