I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the perception of mining stocks at that time. My only experience of any bullish magnitude was the 93-97 period and I have to assume that it was dwarfed by the 79-81 period.

I did trade mining stocks, mostly SA and I was trading futures during that period.

The big difference, especially in mania terms was that during that period the mining stocks especially the SA stocks paid huge dividends. You could buy a stock and expect to get 100% dividend return within 1 or two years. Stocks were analyzed as to what their dividend would be if gold went to 600, 800, or a 1000. It wasn't what the stock price would be although may be that was just understood that the stock price had to be a multiple of the dividend.
