Sharp to Boost Spending on Plants, Equipment by a Third Next FY
By Keiko Kambara and Kyoko Suzuki

Osaka, Japan, June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Sharp Corp., Japan's largest maker of liquid-crystal displays, plans to increase spending on new plants and equipment by 33 percent next fiscal year, Chief Financial Officer Hiroshi Saji said.

The Osaka-based company will use cash for the expansion instead of selling bonds, Saji said in a telephone interview. In total, Sharp plans to spend 180 billion yen ($1.5 billion) on new plants and equipment in the year ending March 31, 2004, he said.

In the past month, Sharp's shares tumbled by about 13 percent because of investors' concerns that the company will incur debt as it builds new factories to stay competitive with Korean and Taiwanese rivals.

``It's positive'' that Sharp won't be selling bonds, said Kazuaki Otsuka, who helps manage about 4 billion yen in Sharp and other equities at ING Mutual Funds Management Co. (Japan) Ltd. ``The issue is whether the company will really boost profits after the investment.''
