Fuji Photo to Accelerate LCD Film Expansion Plans (Update2)
By Julie Tay

quote.bloomberg.com

Tokyo, June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Fuji Photo Film Co., the world's second-largest photography company, said it will spend as much as 12 billion yen ($96.5 million) to build a new factory making film for liquid-crystal displays, to meet growing demand.

The factory will probably be built in South Korea or Taiwan, the first time Fuji Photo has constructed any film plant overseas, Naoki Hama, manager of Fuji Photo's electronics display material group, said in an interview. The move is necessary to be close to customers, Hama said, adding that construction will start next year, rather than in 2004 as originally planned.

Fuji Photo is benefiting as more LCDs are used in such products as computer monitors, cell phones and televisions. Global sales of flat-panel displays will almost triple to $57.2 billion in 2006 from $22 billion last year, market research company DisplaySearch estimates. LCDs make up 80 percent of the flat- screen market.
