The killer app is needed to take the semis out of their funk.
Users need a reason to upgrade and they don't have any. Software has matured and the new applications are incremental changes (improvements?) from the previous version. For a while every new version of Word or Excel taxed the computer you were using and forced you to upgrade. The newer software generally offered improvements over the previous version. It was an insidious relationship between software and hardware which now seems to have ended. I'm not even sure that the availability of movies on the internet will be enough to coax the average computer user to upgrade. Maybe, the use of wireless technology to link the home entertainment center to the computer which will be used to download videos and audio will require a more powerful machine. This will also enable the completion of the fiber-optic network and revive the network/fiber industry as well. In the mean time future prospects look bleak for high tech with no engine to drive consumption.
