Novell and POET Software Form Strategic Alliance To Enhance Novell's Internet and Intranet Solutions

July 14, 1997 10:42 AM EDT

Object Database Vendor To Provide Networking Software Leader Advanced Technology For Internet and Intranet Development

SAN MATEO, Calif., and PROVO, Utah, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Novell, Inc. and POET Software Corp. today announced a strategic alliance that will provide Novell with extensive new capabilities to support Internet and intranet solutions.

Under the terms of the partnership agreement, POET Software will license its POET Universal Object Server to Novell. POET's Universal Object Server offers Novell the tools necessary to better support the complex and diverse data types such as video, audio and HTML required for Internet applications, and will enable Novell and its developer community to more quickly and easily deploy solutions using Internet standards such as Java, ODMG and CORBA.

"It's clear that support for object-oriented database technology is crucial for building real Internet solutions," said Denice Gibson, senior vice president of Novell. "After extensive evaluation of the object database market, POET's Universal Object Server was the obvious winner. In addition to providing a superior ODBMS, POET has an ideal solution for seamlessly supporting relational databases like Oracle to provide enterprise scaleability."

"Novell has the leadership, the installed base, the infrastructure, and now with IntranetWare, the products necessary to own the intranet," said Dirk Bartels, president of POET Software. "Novell's selection of POET lends tremendous credibility to object-oriented technology as a mainstream solution for a broad range of applications. Our partnership will allow us to bring object-oriented technology to a much wider market."

Novell will employ the POET Universal Object Server across a full line of internal and external products to be introduced over the next several quarters. Novell selected POET for its significant competency in object database technology and expertise in integration technologies such as CORBA, COM/DCOM, ODBC and SQL. POET also enhances Novell's support for industry standards and multiple platforms. In addition, it complements Novell's recent agreement with Oracle by providing connectivity to relational databases. In addition to the POET Universal Object Server, POET provides a tool that transparently maps objects from the object oriented development model into relational data stores. This enables developers to interface with relational databases within their object-oriented development environment, avoiding the need to write SQL code. As a result, companies may opt to complement or even replace the POET data store with a relational data store.

About POET Universal Object Server

The POET Universal Object Server is designed to help developers to manage the complexity inherent in today's application development process. It consists of an object storage server, a comprehensive set of system services, an industrial-strength administration facility for system security and data integrity, and a GUI-based workbench for application development.

POET is easily accessible and fully scaleable, and POET's Object Model architecture is integrated with C++, Visual Basic and Java. By handling all of the complexity for developers, POET speeds up the development process, enabling companies to bring products to market more quickly, lower development costs and leverage current investments in training, programs and tools. POET supports the development of collaborative applications with powerful features such as Publish/Subscribe and check-in/check-out. When applications are deployed, POET's Universal Object Server automatically supports workgroup collaboration through POET's concurrency control, OLE automation and ODBC interface. POET's Object Model also helps to easily manage the vast amount of data needed to manipulate, including emerging complex data types such as video, sound and HTML. Plus, POET's small client footprint -- and its replication capabilities -- allow developers to build transportable applications to support mobile computing users. More information about the POET Universal Object Server can be found on POET's Web site at www.poet.com.
