Don't ever let freedom slip down the list. I'm sure that was said without careful thought.

The concern is not so much for the rights of illegal immigrants (although there is a "slippery slope" argument that if you denigrate _their_ rights, it's a short step to denigration of the rights of all) as it is the rights of the citizenry at large. It's not always clear who is legally here and who isn't, especially at the onset of an investigation or surveillance. As I recall, a couple of the 9/11 terrorists were issued visas posthumously; were they "legal?" Some of the others were clearly here legally. McVeigh was here legally, but presumably the homeland security folks would have liked to keep an eye on him.
