1:38 (Dow Jones) Thomas Weisel analyst Kevin Vassily says any weakness in shares of chip equipment makers Applied Materials (AMAT), Novellus (NVLS) and KLA-Tencor (KLAC) on the heels of Intel's (INTC) 2Q revenue warning, represents a buying opportunity. The analyst said the direct impact on equipment spending from Intel's warning is "nil as the company appears to believe that the first half of 2002 is roughly in-line with seasonal patterns." Intel, wrote the analyst, is not the "lever" for capital spending this year but rather the "anchor." He noted that Intel's level of spending in 2001 was robust and that the company hasn't backed away from its 2002 capital spending budget of $5.5 billion. Applied Materials (AMAT) down 3%; Novellus is off 4%; and KLA-Tencor is down 3%. (DLF)
