We can only act according to our best lights. But one should not overdo the mystery of it all. After all, it is better to encourage conflict resolution through courts and elections than through internecine warfare; it is usually better for people to be healthy, educated, and emotionally poised than for them to be diseased, ignorant, and neurotic; children thrive better in stable, caring environments than in chaotic environments where they have to fend too much for themselves; reasonable discussion is better than shoutdowns or riots; and so forth.
