I know that no one in the media has found a record of this caveat to the voters, and that the White House declines to give them a hint. I know that the stories Bush has told in making his claim have been contradictory and goofy. I think it's pretty clear that if no one heard him say it or has a record of his saying it, including at the White House, his post-election claim that he said it, however self-serving a claim, is a lie -- and one that "continually mutates." The truth doesn't mutate so much. . The problem is that there's a long record of Bush promising not to touch the Social Security surplus--but no record of him ever listing these exceptions. The White House has never responded to requests from tnr or other media outlets to provide corroboration. And what makes it all the more suspicious is that Bush's recollection of his alleged campaign promise continually mutates... Read this and tell me with a straight face you think Bush isn't lying. And do you think it wouldn't have made headlines during the campaign if the person to whom he claims to have enumerated some (they changed over time) exceptions ("a reporter," "a fellow," "some guy," "they," "somebody," or "the guy") had been informed that the promise to keep SS in a lock box had suddenly been qualified?
