They ain't no good without the Ammo. 50 tons each,

And what do you think carries the ammo for a Battery of Paladins?? And how long does it require to reload the basic ammo load of a Paladin?

Again... you're not thinking about the CURRENT logistical "tail" required (not even mentioning the manpower) to support a battery of the CURRENT artillery pieces.

Now I am under the understanding that Rumsfield claimed that he canceled the Crusader because they wanted to dedicate the money to newer smart artillery shells and ordnance. It may prove to be justifiable depending on if they can get them deployed to line units. But smart weapons will STILL only be able to deliver so much ordnance on target, although more accurately (one shot, one kill).

But artillery is not designed to be a precision weapon. It's designed for area suppression and bombardment. That means being able to "pummel" your enemy into submission with "cheap" HE, or to keep his head down while your ground forces either advance or withdraw under its cover.

I'm sorry, but few people are going to be able to convince me that being able to "hang" and deliver 8 155mm rounds to a target at the same isn't a "good thing"....
