The fact is that, over the lifetime of the Crusader product, we have no idea whether or not we'll have to defend the Fulda Gap. What's worse, we don't even know which side we'd be defending and who would be on the other side.

I'd rather see money put into developing fancy weapons systems not for their utility in tiddlywinks brush fire campaigns like Afghanistan, Kuwait, or even Vietnam or Korea. What we need fancy weapons systems for is the worst case scenarios, the things that are beyond the ability of anyone now to predict.

I agree that the Paladin will probably do, but artillery has been the backbone of industrialized warfare ever since Napoleon. (I.e. real wars between groups of industrialized nations with universal conscription and where millions of soldiers are killed over decade long conflicts that cover entire continents.)
