Companies to Close for Korea-US Match

Hyundai Heavy Industries, to whom chairman of the Korean Football Association Chung Mong-jun is an advisor, will close on the afternoon of June 10 to allow employees of its Ulsan Shipyard, and their families to watch the Korea-US match on a large screen in its indoor gymnasium.

Also, Daewoo Motors will stop factory operations Monday afternoon, while Ssangyong Motor will briefly stop production from 3:30pm for two hours. Renault Samsung will stop production for the afternoon, but employees will do four hours more work on June 8 though the Seoul headquarters will only work in the morning.

LG Electronics is to allow workers to watch TV in their offices and the Changwon factory will briefly stop the production line for the match. Cheil Jedang announced through its company bulletin board, "Watch the soccer match with division chiefs in the cafeteria on the 16th floor. Red T-shirts are welcome." Hyosung, Hansol, and Haitai Confectionery and Foods will set up large screens for their employees to cheer Korea at their auditoriums.

Portal company Yahoo Korea, an official sponsor of the World Cup will only work in the morning and all 160 employees will watch TV at a nearby pub. Lycos Korea will also work only in the morning and then gather in the company auditorium to watch the game.

Shin Dong-hui, PR director of CJ says, "It will be hard to work anyway and it is more effective to watch soccer for the morale of the employees. If we make it into the final 16, then many companies may take the day off."
