BN 7/14 Microsoft Seeks to Expand, Though Not `Vital,' Gates Says

Sun Valley, Idaho, July 14 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Chairman
and Chief Executive Bill Gates said he's seeking ways to expand his software business into a media empire, though it's not vital to the company's growth, the New York Post reported in an interview with Gates. While Gates said the coming union of television and the Internet ``creates a lot of opportunity,'' he added, ``our business is software.'' Gates also said broadcast television isn't attractive because the networks' proposed standards for digital TV are so different from the computer industry's, the paper reported.

Westinghouse Electric Corp. and Microsoft this month denied a newspaper report that the software giant was exploring a bid to
buy Westinghouse's CBS broadcasting business.
