Justin,
I'll check around on a couple of the national birding websites to see if there is anything being discussed about these ducks. One thing I might mention is that there is a breed of domesticated duck (the Muscovey), that flies very well and likes to perch in all kinds of odd places. They come in a range of colours from white, to black or brown and white, to brown...and I think pure black. They are fairly large in size, have a warted red "mask" around their eyes and near where their bills are. They quack, but are also aggressive when approached and will hiss like a goose. They can start to turn wild...we had some that acted wild, but they generally like to hang around places where they can poach food from barnyards. Anyhow, it's very possible that the ducks you are seeing are a wild species that has expanded its range. I just heard from yet another person up our way that has seen a kind of bird with a range that is normally about 100-200 miles south of here. I think we're starting to see some pretty solid evidence of climate change happening in the flora and fauna.
