I think Intel's basic problem is that they've reached the point in the product cylce for CPUs where the product exceeds the market's requirements.

Clayton Christiansen noted the phenomenon in his book, "The Innovator's Dilemma" on disruptive innovation.

I.e. the next iteration of processor units won't sell well unless someone comes up with "killer app" level reason for the advanced features and speed.
