If not for this, Tommy Franks, as Commander for the area, would have been put in charge of planning, and we would have fought it conventionally, massing troops to take the place over.

I think I read somewhere that that was the case. It would be surprising that Franks, an artillery guy, wouldn't go that route. The way it worked out was very slick. I got a bit nervous reading that some thought they could pull the exact same trick in Iraq, though.
