Nerve Gas Traces Found at U.S. Base in Uzbekistan
Sun Jun 9, 4:57 AM ET

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Traces of nerve gas have been found at a U.S. base in Uzbekistan and all U.S. troops have been evacuated from the site of the old Soviet military installation, a U.S. military spokesman said. Col. Roger King, spokesman for allied forces in Afghanistan ( news - web sites), said traces of possible neurogens had been found at three locations at the Karshi Khanabad air base in Uzbekistan.

No cases of illness had been reported so far, King said.

One of the locations where traces of gas were found was by the headquarters building, set up in a hangar at the air base, King said.

All U.S. soldiers and airmen have been moved away from the areas.

King said it was not immediately known how many of them might have come into contact with the sites, since U.S. forces set up base late last year to support the war against Islamic militants in neighboring Afghanistan.
