People may seem real to us, but I suspect 90% of what we think those other people are is in our imagination.

That may be, but it is no different than if we were pen pals. And it doesn't make anyone less real. It is only that we have a barrier to communication and may not understand each other very well, probably as you say not as well as we may think we do. All the more reason, IMO, to tread cautiously and to give people the benefit of the doubt rather than discount them as irrelevant.

I have not met anyone from SI in person. Someone who lives near me and I discussed the possibility of meeting. When faced with that opportunity, I realized that I'd rather imagine everyone than to have met some and not others. I realized that I rather liked the haze, sort of like an impressionist painting. My reaction surprised me but there it is. I don't think that someone I can't see clearly is any less real or any less vulnerable.
