For anybody into the Arthurian legend, I thought I would list my favorites on this subject.
1) "The Crystal Cave", by Mary Stewart. Usually sold as book one of the "Merlin Trilogy." She wrote four books using Merlin as the storyteller and central figure. The best, IMO, of the Arthurian series.
2) The Skystone (Whyte, Jack. Camulod Chronicles, Bk. 1.) Terrific take on the story, using the Fall of Hadrian's wall and the departure of the Romans from Britain as the starting point. This series, using a Roman Centurion as Arthur's Grandfather and the maker of the Sword, is very well done. Now up to about seven volumes.
3) The Winter King: A Novel of Arthur (Cornwell, Barnard. Warlord Chronicles, 1.) This series tells the tale from the viewpoint of an old monk, once a Knight of the Roundtable, who is writing his memoirs.
I love all three series. Whyte's and Cornwell's are still ongoing. If I could only read one, it would be "The Crystal Cave." |
