AFAIK there is no QCOM-equivalent in WiFi. Take a look at the shelves at Best Buy: everybody and their mother is making wireless ethernet products, no surprise they've gotten so cheap, so fast. Deployment across a metro area would be similar to cell deployment, without the nastiness of spending infrastructure money on spectrum.

Steve brought up a good point about range and line of sight type interference. That is true for consumer basestations, but for metro access points there is no reason to stay away from much bigger antennas, more power, etc at the base end.

I have to say, going wireless ethernet at home has been more of a revelation that I ever expected. I don't know that anybody is ever going to make money off of this, though.
