That is simply not the view shared by others. The vast majority of the Vietnamese did not feel 'protected' by us; they felt we were propping up a corrupt regime for our own self interests. The Kuwaits feel some gratitude, but know deep down that if there was no oil there we probably would have left them to Suddam. Arab countries feel we have been protecting an Israel that has been occupying their lands and repressing the Palestinians. Each time we act, we need to justify to our people why we do so, so there always needs to be some underlying motive.

I do not share all their views, as I believe that the rank-and-file Americans really want to help in these situations. However, we are still viewed as helpful only when it is convenient. Remember the scene from Apocolyse Now: fill em full of holes then give them a bandaid.
