Political considerations in member countries could cause early break-up of the euro
(Filed: 10/06/2002)

In a recent interview, Sir Alan Walters predicted that the euro would break up "in five years" - a stark prediction, apparently at variance with the political commitment of 12 eurozone states to the new currency.

But Walters' track record is impressive. He told Edward Heath that his policies would cause double-digit inflation and was dismissed for his pains.

His advice to Margaret Thatcher as her personal economic adviser led to years of low inflation and sustained growth in the 1980s, tragically ended by Nigel Lawson in the name of "shadowing the Exchange Rate Mechanism".
