I think you underestimate the typical American. I believe that the vast majority of Americans, regardless of religion, have a deeply seated sense of right and wrong. Americans have a hair-trigger to injustice. Martin Luther King Jr resonated not because of his religious beliefs, but because of his sense of justice. As strictly a religious leader, MLK was unimportant nationally. As a leader of justice and civil rights, regardless of religous content, he was a giant. Speaking of injustice, I'm watching the Lakers game, and they're getting robbed... <g>
