I think eventually IP based SANs will replace fiber channel. I think Brocade should migrate to IP based SANs before somebody else cannibalises their product. Its a lot
easier to find people who can manage IP as opposed to finding fiber channel experts. The ubiquity of IP, no of players who have experience implementing IP based systems will translate into lower cost of ownership for SANS which
will translate to better ROI for corporations. I think Brocade is dead long term if they don't move to an IP based strategy. Sort of reminds me of Novell continuing to
stick with Netware in spite of it being cear that IP was
the way to go. In the end Microsoft ate their lunch by giving away the TCP/IP stack with their OS. I see a similar
thing happening to Brocade with Cisco and other start ups
pushing IP based SANs.
