<< When you say, "The Arabs have never maintained or claimed to be a democratic society," it sort of sounds like you are supporting their right to behave like this. Are you? >>

I am not supporting any of the Arabs' human right violations against their own people anymore than I am condoning the Israelis' human right violations of the Palestinians in the occupied territory. It is simply not the United States' business to dictate to the Arab states which form of government their society chooses.

The big difference is the Israelis are using this "we are the only true democracy" propaganda in the Middle East when it is, at best, a very selective democracy for Jews. The democracy in Israel is not equivalent to the democracy in the United States. So the answer to your question is: I don't believe in nationalism; I don't believe in ethnic cleansing (both Arab or Israeli).

So on what grounds do I support a Palestinian state. Well, it's a practical consideration and here is my thought. It's more than evident no Arab nations will ever accept the Palestinian refugees into their nation for assimilation. It's also clear the Israelis will never accept Palestinian Arabs into Israel, proper, for fear of losing her Jewish identity. It is also unrealistic for the rest of the world to absorb all of the Palestinian refugees into their countries (not that the Palestinians would accept the world's charity) considering the root of the Palestinian refugee problem was created by an Arab/Israeli dispute.

So what are your options?

While it might be true there were no Palestinian people or culture prior to the creation of the state of Israel, the oppression and occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip has now created such a de facto culture in the same way an American black culture or people were created by the enslavement of native black Africans in the United States.
