I'm reminded of the people who claim "Puff the Magic Dragon" was about drugs. At the time I had no clue about that. I just thought it was a nice children's song. I was into a combination of classical and folk music then, and hardly listened to any pop music at all. When I was in college I didn't have either a radio or a stereo (or a TV) in my room, and after I got out I don't think I even owned a radio until the 1980s, and I bought my first TV when I moved to NYC, which was when I was 33. Up 'till then I never owned one. I just never was into contemporary culture, so I missed a lot of the references everybody is supposed to have known all about.
