So we've managed to completely forget about the settlements issue, the destruction of Palestinian homes, the occupation issue. The Palestinians are now just agents of other countries.

I haven't forgotten anything. But the proxy war is real, John, and ignoring it won't make it go away. Arafat let Saudi-funded Hamas become more and more powerful, and if you'll remember, the suicide bombing did not first start when peace looked unlikely, but in 1994 and 1995 when peace looked likely. That's how Bibi was voted into office if you'll remember.

In fact, there's a good case to be made that the proxy war is one of the chief reasons why Arafat could not make a deal with the most dovish Israeli government in history, one that was willing to dismantle most of the settlements and give back 95% of the land. If the Arab countries had wanted this conflict settled, it would be settled. They want the conflict continued as they derive a great deal of benefit from it. In the current situation, they are deriving the huge benefit of slowing or halting the US move against Iraq, something they would have no hope of achieving otherwise.
