In fact, there's a good case to be made that the proxy war is one of the chief reasons why Arafat could not make a deal with the most dovish Israeli government in history, one that was willing to dismantle most of the settlements and give back 95% of the land.

The conflicting accounts of all this, so well pictured in the exchange in the most recent issue of The New York Review of Books just don't matter, do they. You've got your story and you're sticking to it.

Nadine, it would help the thread no end if you could simply relax, let posters with counter views put up their thoughts and not try to hammer them into submission. How about thinking of the thread as an ongoing conversation in which everyone learns from one another. Rather than a debate forum in which the last one to type wins.
