Leap Offers Nokia's First 1x Handset & Unlimited Text BY KRISTY BASSUENER JUNE 10, 2002 NEWS@2 DIRECT
Leap Wireless International, parent company of Cricket Communications, today rolls out advanced handsets and services. The San Diego-based carrier is the first to offer Nokia's new 6370 CDMA2000 1x-enabled handset, which begins shipping today. Offered for $99, the new handset features Internet access, two-way text messaging and downloadable ring tones as well as space for 500 names in its phone book.
Although Leap doesn't offer third-generation services, using the CDMA2000 1x handsets and networks enables Cricket to expand its voice capacity. Given that the company offers all-you-can-talk local calling, more capacity means more people can use its networks.
Keeping with its all-you-can-eat services credo, Leap also today announces that Cricket Customers can pay a flat rate for text messaging services. For a fee of $4.99 per month, Cricket subscribers can send and receive an unlimited number of messages from other Cricket users as well as mobile-phone subscribers whose carriers support interoperable messaging.
''Given the 'cool' factor of two-way wireless messaging with friends, we expect this new services to be especially popular with the under-30 crowd,'' says Harvey White, Leap's chairman and CEO. |
