SAN JOSE -- VLSI Research Inc. here raised its growth forecast for the worldwide semiconductor equipment market in 2002, but the business will remain in negative territory as compared to 2001.
The San Jose-based market research firm also projected that the worldwide chip-equipment business will increase from $36.89 billion in terms of sales in 2002, to $100.25 billion by 2007, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22%.
In its internal forecast last month, VLSI Research projected that the worldwide IC-equipment market would hit $34.56 billion in 2002. Now, the firm raised its forecast, saying it will reach $36.89 this year, down about 6% over 2001.
In 2001, the worldwide semiconductor equipment market hit $39.3 billion, down a staggering 34.7% from 2000, they said.
The semiconductor-equipment market “is getting better,” due to a slight rebound in the overall IC business, said Aida Jebens, who tracks the market for VLSI Research. “We are saying that 2002 will be a recovery year,” she said.
Growth will resume in 2003 and will peak in 2004, according to VLSI Research. Another business slowdown is expected in 2005, followed by recovery years in 2006 and 2007, they added.
The front-end fab equipment segment is expected to jump from $21.71 billion in 2002, to $59.15 billion by 2007, a 22.2% growth rate, according to VSLI Research. Meanwhile, the IC test market is projected to increase from $8.04 billion in 2002, to $24 billion by 2007, a 24.5% growth rate, according to VSLI Research.
The assembly-equipment market is expected to jump 28.4%, from $2.43 billion in 2002, to $8.47 billion in 2007. And the spare part and service arena is projected to increase from $4.71 billion in 2002, to $8.63 billion by 2007, a 28.4% growth rate. |
