John, I'll make you a deal. If you don't tell me what to post, I won't tell you what to post.

No deal, Nadine. I am, of course, not telling you what to post but offering a small piece of advice as to how to post. Different matters.

I have not noticed the posters on this thread running away in terror at the prospect of a debate. On the contrary, they seem able to defend their positions quite ably. Some of us find debates more educational than cooing, "thank you dear, for that interesting point of view." In fact, I thought debating issues was one of the points of a discussion thread such as FADG.

That's exactly where you misunderstand. Debating is well down the list of modes of discussion, or should be. Learning from one another is first on the list, perhaps second and third as well. Or should be.

As for folk on the thread defending themselves, these are the survivors. They, of course, are willing to debate. For sometime, I would receive at least two posts a week discussing what looked to be becoming a thread style. I suggested, always to the poster, that he/she dive in. Inevitably, they got slammed, backed away, did not return. Now I no longer get those e-mails. Those folk, just wishing to have a friendly conversation now and then, evidently found themselves having to constantly defend themselves.

I see no reason to debate whether to debate. I offered a thought; you rejected it. End of that.
