GV - Re:"Railroad tracks, all private enterprise"

The idea that Railroads were entirely the result of private enterprise is a popular myth.

The Railroads received huge subsidies from the government in the 1800s to build their tracks in the West. Huge land grants were given to the Railroads to encourage the laying of track in the West. The land included not just the right of way but also large tracts of land along the right of way.

Whole towns were built on Railroad land at a station and huge amounts of money were made from these land grants. The Railroad monopoly along the routes that resulted from the grants produced lots of price gouging by the Railroads and eventually resulted in regulation by the Interstate Commerce Commission.
