So I don't quarrel with them on that placement.

The problem, as I see it, is:

1) The original story was given "National" placement.

2) They delayed running it at all when it first became available.

they have not pressed the civil liberties issues strongly enough

I think they realize that the country is going to give the administration a chance on this one. If the FBI/Justice steps over the line, they will be on them like "White on Rice." It is ironic that the biggest voice in the Times against the FBI on civil rights has been Safire.

My political views today are a rather far cry from my views in the late 60s.
