This gets to the core of the current conflict of perceptions. Can one speak of an "peace process" that co-exists with the suicide bombers of the intifada?

Yes, I see that point. But it strikes me that you only negotiate with parties with which you are at war. I think several members of the thread have made that point.

One of the few bits of leverage the Palestinians have is the threat of more suicide bombing so they are not likely to give that up. It's my impression that Sharon's point, in insisting there must be an end to the suicide bombing before he will negotiate is that he either sees that will never happen and thus will lead to permanent Israeli occupation of the West Bank and/or Gaza, or that if it is given up the Palestinians enter the bargaining process with a bit less leverage. I say "bit less" because everyone will be aware they can pick it up again.
