But, from what I read of the left in Israel, who agree with John and want to still try to make peace with Arafat, an "Olive Branch" from Arafat will cause a move to the left in Israel, and they will be back in the same old Arab box again.

Not exactly my position. A bit more nuanced. ;-)

I agree with much of the criticism of Arafat's leadership and, should other leadership emerge, or should there be a real chance for a better governmental structure, I'm completley in agreement. But right now Arafat is the guy and only the Palestinians should tackle the question of what to do with him. My reasoning is both a principle--they should have the right; and pragmatic--any leadership put in place by outside powers will not survive.
