Restoration is a necessary process for many things, but can itself be controversial. For example, there was a terrible hubbub after the restoration of the Sistine Chapel. Although working according to established norms, the change in appearance was found deeply disturbing by many people, who had taken for granted that the "deepening" effects of time, humidity, smoke, and whatnot were part of the original, somehow..........
