"Pawns for al Qaeda" misstates the speculation. The speculation is that the PA is acting as a proxy force for the radical Arab regimes.

Nope, the speculation I recalled specifically mentioned Al Qaeda. I don't recall the several posts which speculated about it and I'm not going to take the time to track them down.

But, as for the other speculation, that other Arab countries are funding the Palestinians, I never considered that speculation. It's apparently quite true. I've seen nothing that suggests otherwise.

But, having said that, that doesn't undermine the nationalist argument. Most such wars are funded by other states wishing, for whatever reasons, to cause trouble. If it were not so funded, it would be remarkable, and, I would guess, almost without precedent.
