You're not always much worse, either.

You are certainly (overall) far more contentious and litigious than Canadians. I think this relates to an overweening emphasis on individualism which tends to create an us-versus-them mentality rather than a "we"...

Years ago I read "We the Living" by Rand. I was moved by a passsage in which she voiced the feeling that there was something so personal and private and essential that informed the essence of an individual, that it ought never be touched by another. It moved me then, and it moves me now. It is this which leads me to believe that endless contention is feckless and counter-productive. Other people are individuals, too. So I see the American tendency to endlessly litigate as an example of misplaced values, and representative of over-reaction and lack of perspective...
