Self interest. Western Canada has energy resources which encourage a greater sense of autonomy. As well, they are leery about sharing a disproportionate share of resources for the "common good".

Eastern Canada had some major losses in the free trade agreement with regards to manufacturing. The clothing industry is a case in point. Leaving sentimentality aside, it is possible that (for instance) Alberta...would be better off economically if they were to trade their resources at top dollar and reduce their tax liability in line with their (relative) economic wealth (and power) as a sovereign protectorate of the US. I am saying this without research but merely espousing a viewpoint based on some everyday familiarity with certain Canadian issues...usually unspoken...

A collective society which operates somewhat more like "family" than like opponents. I spent many years espousing individualism and capitalism. I still do. However, a few years have taught me the wisdom of encouraging everyone to win a little...rather than a few to win everything--or many to live lives without hope or meaning. I just think that simply being alive is such an incredible lottery, that we should all consider ourselves to be in very special and selective company. Canadians impose an obligation of compassion. It is not necessarily the real thing; but the effects are real enough...
