they are leery about sharing a disproportionate share of resources for the "common good".
Sharing? I would think they would SELL them to whoever wanted to buy them, Canadian or not. No?

Eastern Canada had some major losses in the free trade agreement with regards to manufacturing.
Capitalism is tough. The US had to go through some wrenching changes on the way to its current position. ANd may have to go through more. There's room at the top but no place to sit.

Remember the 1970's when the Arabs were going to own the world? Remembering the 1980's when the Japanese were going to overrun us? Remembering when downsizing was the only corporate word that could be counted on? The US S&L crisis?

Leaving sentimentality aside, it is possible that (for instance) Alberta...would be better off economically if they were to trade their resources at top dollar and reduce their tax liability in line with their (relative) economic wealth (and power) as a sovereign protectorate of the US.
If the US gov't has any intention of taking any Canadian territory, it's not apparent. And if it does, it will do so against my opposition and that of a great many million other Americans.
Such a plan is best left unhatched.

A collective society which operates somewhat more like "family" than like opponents.
Opponents? There are differing and conflicting interests in American business, gov't and society, but that is true of any reasonably free and democratic society- -including yours.

encouraging everyone to win a little...rather than a few to win everything
But a few don't win everything in American society. Microsoft has made more millionaires than any company in the history of the world. I came from lower middle class America; I worked and struggled through college, learned my field, and worked at a startup. It took a while, but that eventually paid off.

We have the largest middle class in the world in the US. How can a few be winning everything?

or many to live lives without hope or meaning.
But that's exactly what capitalism in tandem with democracy can avoid.
