That's the first time I've heard Christianity blamed for the decline of the Roman empire. Where doth that theory come from?

My understanding is more that it was a combination of weak leaders, timidity, a replacement of the sense of duty to country as the paramount virtue with individualism, too much love of luxury, an increasingly large and increasingly ineffective bureaucracy, and a focus on building comfort at home in lieu of maintaining a stong military.

But I confess that I have only dipped into Gibbon. Do you have a better handle on his theories?
