Actually, in practice, it works the other way around. The local white box guy typically undersells Dell by many percentage points for exactly the same box content. Better still, he is just around the corner when the box has a problem. You don't spend many minutes on hold waiting for a "tech rep" to come on the line to tell you that the problem is "software related", and you don't have to pay the shipping costs nor wait for weeks for the return of your (hopefully) repaired PC. You just drop the box off at his shop and pick it up a day later. I've checked this situation out from one coast to the other and what I describe above is the norm.

A PC is a high maintenance item, and just as is the case when purchasing a car, it sure is nice to have a motivated local guy to provide quality service.
